Week of March 8th
At the writing table, it's time for THE BAGGIE BOOK PROJECT. This project is a literacy activity that can empower a child to view him or herself as a reader when he or she is two to five years old. On a daily basis, we are surrounded by what is called "environmental print." Examples of this print are the McDonald's sign, stop signs, a cereal logo, Fairway logo on a supermarket bag--these are all examples of print our chlidren can ALREADY recognize and read without any adult assistance because these things are personally significant to them.
In the weeks ahead, your children will need your help to gather examples of environmental print that they ALREADY know. Once your child has finished collecting examples, the children will assemble these cuttings into a book of their own. So, get your scissors, browse the Sunday paper, kids magazines, and grocery/food packages with your children and send in their words and logos in an envelope with your child's name clearly marked on the front. Let's get our kids excited about reading!
Look for a an example of a completed BAGGIE BOOK on display in the school entrance waiting area.
We will be also be reading rhyming books this week---which will include a variety of Dr. Seuss books, DOWN BY THE BAY, MRS. McNOSH HANGS UP HER WASH, MRS. McNOSH AND THE GREAT BIG SQUASH, OH MY GOSH, MRS. McNOSH, THE POPCORN SHOP, and DAN THE FLYING MAN.
At the nature table, we are still learning all about composting. We are working on our own worm conpost container! In the weeks ahead, you will be getting some information about starting composting at home.
In drama, we continue with our restaurant exploration. We will be concentrating on the role playing of different jobs in the restaurant. We will play a charades game to help define the activity. The children will take turns to present their role while the group guesses.
In music this week, we will continue playing instruments together, listening and discovering new ways to play in a group, talking about recycling, and listening to echo songs on the clarinet. We will finish each group with movement activities, without bumping into each other!
In math this week we will find out that shapes are everywhere! We will become "shape detectives" searching in the classroom for square objects. We will photograph our "finds" and put the photos on our "square poster."
At the art table, we will take a break from our drum making; this activity will resume next week. This week will be "self portrait" week. We will work on self portaits at the art table, and also at the easel. We will be using our over-head projector and look at our silhouettes too!
